Municipal Corporation launches Chandigarh's first decentralized waste processing plant

The municipal corporation (MC) of Chandigarh has taken a significant step in improving waste management by launching the city's first decentralized waste processing plant. The project, which is part of the Aatmanirbhar Ward pilot scheme, focuses on making Ward Number 35, encompassing Sectors 48, 49, 50, and 63, self-reliant in managing daily wet waste.

Inaugurated with MPLAD funds, project targets self-sufficiency 

Using funds allocated under the MPLAD (Member of Parliament Local Area Development) scheme, the plant was inaugurated by Member of Parliament Kirron Kher, accompanied by Mayor Anup Gupta and area councillor Rajinder Sharma. The plant's main objective is to address the wet waste generated by four bulk waste generator societies in the area, namely Pushpak Society, Progressive Society, BSNL Society, and Kendriya Vihar Society, which collectively produce over 984 kilograms (approximately 1 metric ton) of wet waste each day. Additionally, the ward generates 496 kilograms of dry waste daily.

Currently, all this waste is transported to MC's central processing plant at Dadumajra, incurring costs and manpower. The new decentralized plant is set to transform mixed or segregated waste into RDF (refuse-derived fuel) pellets, which have a high calorific value. This initiative not only promotes sustainable waste management but also saves on transportation costs and labor.
